Komar Distribution Services Moves Entire Sortation System in One Week

About Komar Distribution Services

Leading 3PL Distribution Services Provider

Established in 1908, Komar is a leading provider of supply chain solutions and third-party logistics (3PL) services. The company moves more than 135 million units annually, supporting its own apparel brands as well as many of the country’s largest retailers.

The Challenge

Scaling Operations Without Slowing Down

Komar Distribution Services is growing fast. They ship products to nearly every major retailer in the country, supporting more than 100 brands and 500 retailers across 50 product categories.

To keep pace with that growth, Komar needed to relocate operations from a 750,000 sq. ft. facility to a new 850,000 sq. ft. distribution center with higher ceilings and increased storage capacity.

The challenge? Moving critical sortation infrastructure quickly—without disrupting throughput, productivity, or continued growth.

The Solution

A Sortation System Built to Move

At the heart of Komar Distribution Services’ fulfillment operation is tSort—their largest and most critical automation system. It handles the vast majority of order sorting within the facility, powering the speed, accuracy, and scalability required to support their rapidly growing business.

Unlike traditional sortation systems, tSort is designed for total mobility.

  • No bolting to the floor, allowing true plug-and-play flexibility

  • No heavy, fixed conveyor systems that lock you into rigid layouts
  • Runs on standard 120V power—no costly or complex electrical rework required

  • Fully mobile, wheeled design so the entire system can be quickly reconfigured or relocated as needs change

  •  High tolerance for uneven floors

The system is made up of just a few core components:

  • Mobile tables on wheels that robots run on
  • Induction stations
  • Destination containers
  • Autonomous mobile robots that transport items from induction stations to destination containers

Because of this simple, modular design, the move was straightforward. The process mainly involved disconnecting the tables from one another and from power (standard 120V), then wheeling each component onto trucks for transport to the new facility. From there, everything was reassembled and brought back online.

The Tompkins Robotics team led the relocation end-to-end, ensuring Komar’s ongoing operations continued without disruption. In total, the entire system was moved and fully operational again in less than a week.
